Scott E. Weiner, Certified Hypnotist and a member of the National Guild of Hypnotists
Interview in West Side Spirit and (East Side) Our Town by Sherry Karabin
The following is an edited transcript of an interview with Scott Weiner.

How long have you been teaching the class at the Learning Annex?

“The Amazing Power of Self-Hypnosis: Program Your Mind for Change” is a new class that I’m doing for the
Learning Annex this year, focusing on teaching people to do self-hypnosis.   Last year I taught “Hypnosis for
Stress Relief.”

How long have you been a certified hypnotist?

I took my first hypnosis classes 10 years ago, but I was busy with my corporate job so I waited until three
years ago to get certified and to go into private practice.  I took a certification program by The National Guild
of Hypnotists, taught by
Melissa Tiers here in NYC at the Center for Integrative Hypnosis. In the program you
learn how to safely and effectively hypnotize people as well as to teach people how to do self-hypnosis. And
we are required to do continuing education each year to maintain our certification.

What’s the difference between being hypnotized and self-hypnosis?

When a hypnotist guides a client into an altered state of consciousness, the client is the one who is actually
creating his/her own “trance” or hypnosis.  The hypnotist then utilizes the trance through customized imagery
and suggestions.  What I teach in my class is how you can easily put yourself into that relaxing trance.

What does the class teach?

The class teaches three things:

First, it teaches what hypnosis is; the background to hypnosis, and clarifies misconceptions.  Unfortunately,
there are a lot of misconceptions from Hollywood movies that have to be clarified.

Second, the class teaches how to create effective suggestions and imagery for the self-hypnosis.

Third, I demonstrate self-hypnosis by guiding the class into a hypnotic trance and giving them suggestions
and imagery for relaxation, letting go of stress and negative emotion—and for increasing positive emotions
and successful feelings.

I then teach the class two ways to do self-hypnosis.  We practice both ways so that everybody is confident
that they know how to induce and deepen a trance, how to utilize the trance with suggestions and imagery,
and how to emerge from the trance.

In addition I teach several powerful rapid techniques for reducing stress as a way of demonstrating the
power of their imagination.  One of the most import aspects is that people write down their goals and
benefits, suggestions and imagery for change.  This is an important opportunity for each person to gain
clarity about the “New Me.”

Who is the class designed to help?

Everyone.  The course is designed for anybody who would like to use self-hypnosis for changing habits (to
stop smoking, lose weight, etc.), reducing stress and for increasing positive attitudes and successful
feelings.  Some people who take the class want to increase their confidence, stop procrastinating, gain
greater self-control, change habits, have better focus and memory, sleep better, overcome worrying and
fears, etc.

Who are your students?

They range in age from 20 to those who have retired and are about evenly divided between men and women.

What should people expect by the time they complete the class?

They should expect to be able to use self-hypnosis on a daily basis and to create effective suggestions and
imagery.  They will also learn several amazing rapid stress reducing techniques.

What made you want to go into hypnosis?

I have an unusual and interesting background.  I have a Ph.D. in philosophy and was a college professor.
After that, I have been working in the pharmaceutical industry for eight years.  When you combine these
interests in mind, body, health, and transformation,  I wanted to use a mind-body approach to help people.
It’s really amazing how rapidly hypnosis can help people! That’s why I became a hypnotist with a private
practice.  I’m also a corporate trainer, seminar leader, and a consultant for corporations looking to train
better.  I love teaching and so I want to share the power of self-hypnosis with others through teaching at the
Learning Annex.

How often do the classes take place?

Monthly.  For a full description and list of class dates and times you can check my web site www.
